The researchers found that the extract significantly reduced inflammation in the brain and improved cognitive function in the mice.
In addition to ergothioneine, oyster mushrooms contain other compounds that may contribute to their brain health benefits, such as polysaccharides and beta-glucans. These compounds have been shown to have immune-modulating effects, which may help to protect the brain from inflammation and other forms of damage.
One study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology investigated the effects of oyster mushroom polysaccharides on neuroinflammation in mice with induced brain injury. The researchers found that the polysaccharides significantly reduced inflammation in the brain and improved cognitive function in the mice.
While most of the research on oyster mushrooms and brain health has been conducted in animal models, there is some evidence to suggest that these benefits may extend to humans as well. A small pilot study published in the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms found that oyster mushroom powder supplementation improved cognitive function in older adults.
Overall, the research suggests that oyster mushrooms may have a range of potential brain health benefits, including protecting against oxidative stress and inflammation, improving cognitive function, and potentially reducing the risk of age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases.
